Should Men Be Screened For Prostate Cancer?

Just last week, two major studies on the usefulness of screening men for prostate cancer were released; one was a US study and the other was done in Europe. You can find a good summary article written by Tara Parker-Pope at this link at http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/03/23/for-men-to-screen-or-not-to-screen/#comment-261739.

  1. I had a radical prostatectomy on 1997 and am a firm 'believer" in PSA screening. I am trying to grasp this controversy over PSA testing and don't understand the statistics. What is the basis for the claim that so many men are being overtreated and what is the cause. Is there a way to expand PSA testing, whiich I see as a good thing, while reducing the amt of overtreatment. Is the overtreatment a result of fear? poor medical advice? or an unavoidable statistical aspect of current knowledge and predictive ability.
